The life of the parish during the war
Few families were unaffected by the war. Food was scarce, labour was in short supply, soldiers were billeted in most homes, often for months at a time. Many people helped the war effort by joining voluntary groups organised to establish law and order and grow more food, and they made donations of money, food and clothing, all of which were needed both by the hospitals in Charing and the service men abroad.
