Those who served – and some of their families
Over 270 men from Charing served. Some were regulars, some enlisted in the early days of the war, some later. These panels look at volunteering and conscription and at a few of the families of those who served, some of whom never returned. Many families lost one member. The Hardwicks, Sages and Woodcocks lost two. All three of the Towner brothers who enlisted died. There were some happier stories, however, and our final panel looks at two men with Charing connections who won the VC.
