The role of the railway during the war

The presence of a railway station at Charing made a huge difference to what happened in the parish during the war. While some men marched to the coast, many came by train, which almost certainly played a part in choosing the parish for long-term billeting over three winters. It also meant that hospital trains could disgorge the wounded only a few hundred yards from the hospitals.

Despite restrictions on civilian use during the war, the station was also extremely important for the transport of fuel and agricultural products.
